Loyal and devoted

Rottweilers develop intense bonds with the families they live with that last a lifetime. Often described as “Velcro dogs”, they are known for sticking close to their owners and following them everywhere.

Naturally protective

Vigilant guardians, rottweilers often take their role of territory and family protectors seriously. This behaviour should manifest as calm alertness though, not unprovoked aggression.

Confident

A self-assured breed, rottweilers often take a "wait-and-see" stance toward new individuals and environments. They prefer to observe before they engage.

Highly intelligent

Rottweilers are eager to please, making them highly trainable. They excel in obedience, agility and working roles, which includes search and rescue, military and police work.

Mental stimulation and physical exercise

The high intelligence of rottweilers means they require regular mental stimulation, so they don’t become bored. Bred as carting and drover dogs, rottweilers have a powerful physicality. This means they also need routine exercise to stay content and fit.

Early socialisation

Due to their natural protective instincts, socialisation at an early age is vital for rottweilers to ensure they accept unfamiliar animals and people.

Consistent leadership

Rottweilers need fair but firm positive reinforcement from handlers who are experienced and can establish clear boundaries and stick to them.
