Improving relationships between dogs and their owners

As a dog behaviourist, my approach delves deeper into understanding the emotional and psychological aspects of a dog's behaviour. Unlike a dog trainer, I focus on addressing the root cause of behavioural issues rather than just teaching commands or obedience. I assess and interpret a dog's body language, reactions, and triggers to comprehend their underlying motivations and anxieties.

How I Work with You and Your Dog

Standard obedience training tends to focus on the symptom rather than addressing the bigger picture. For example, a dog trainer will work on reactive behaviour by using distraction techniques. This may provide a short term resolve for some dogs, but it is not sustainable over longer periods and will eventually stop working.

“Azz spent over 4 hours with us showing and explaining in depth different techniques with dog behaviour and dog training to help Betsy with her reactivity towards other dogs, her dominant behaviour within our household and gave me a confidence boost I was really needing.

The difference is already amazing and i am so looking forward to continuing what Azz has taught us today and get Betsy where she needs to be. I could not recommend Azz enough.”

“Azz has been helping our rescue Moose with his food aggression issues. After a few hours at our home Azz knew the issue needed more attention and offered to take Moose for the weekend.

Since his return Moose has been a lot more chilled, less reactive and much more calm when it's dinner time. There is still work to be done but we are now heading in the right direction”

“Bernard went for some 1-2-1 behaviour training. He has been a delight since coming home. He is much calmer, not as boisterous as before. We couldn’t have done it without your help and advice. Would recommend anyone having issues to give this a try.”

"I called Azz about our Cocker Poo Otis after an aggressive episode with another dog when we had a three month old baby. I was panicked and devastated that our friendly puppy had attacked another dog and knew it needed to be nipped in the bud.

His advice has led to a more relaxed, happier and well behaved dog all round. We are extremely grateful to him and would recommend Azz's services to anyone who is concerned about their dogs behaviour!"

        What does the price include?
        • Full assessment of your dog (or dogs) to ascertain the root cause and or potential environmental influences contributing towards the exacerbation or development of unwanted behavioural issues. You will be made aware of the cause of the behavioural issue and will actively take part in the solution.
        • A clear plan of action will be put in place to turn unwanted behaviours around and re-establish a calm and balanced relationship between dog and owner based on implementing the re-direction of self-taught unwanted behaviours from the dog.
        • A report is provided covering everything that is visited throughout the session to include specific pointers relevant specifically for the dog worked with. This should be followed each day with consistency from the owner/s for a bare minimum of the following two months.
        • In addition to this, support by phone or WhatsApp video is available for the life of your pet at no extra charge.
How long will the session take?

The session will last up to 4 hours, but I do not clock watch.

Why do you not split the sessions into several shorter sessions?

I do not drip feed information into shorter sessions over time as this is a more effective way for me to impart information and guarantee understanding from the client. My clients also find this more cost effective.

Where will the session take place?
The session will take place both inside and out, depending on specific requirements.
        What methods do you use?

There are so many opinions on the internet about what methods should or should not be used when working with your dog that it often leaves owners feeling over whelmed as to what they should be doing. Finding the right approach for your dog is essential.

        Positive Reinforcement:

This involves lots of reward and play on a positive level to help shape the behaviour you want by helping the dog increase its chances of repeating the desired behaviour, whilst at the same time simply ignoring the behaviour you do not want. This way, the dog is given the choice to repeat behaviour that is followed by a positive result.

        Operant Conditioning:

This is also known as instrumental conditioning. This focuses on associating behaviours with consequences to either increase or decrease their frequency. This is achieved using positive reinforcement (rewarding desired behaviours) and mitigated corrections (discouraging unwanted behaviours).

Here is a more detailed explanation:

        • Operant Conditioning:
A process of where the dog’s behaviour is modified by its consequences.
        • Positive Reinforcement:
Adding something desirable (a treat or praise) to increase the likelihood of something being repeated.

I use a combination of both to meet a point in the middle that is both fair, and realistic to either increase or decrease behaviours in dogs without being harmful to the overall long-term development of their behaviour physically or mentally. In short, this creates a perfectly balanced relationship between dog and owner.

What else do you go over?
        • Clients will be helped to understand and recognise specific aspects of their own dog’s body language, eye contact and verbal communication, as well as any contributing environmental factors that may be relevant.
        • The owner will learn how to communicate with their dog from a point of view that the dog understands, rather than relying solely on manmade constructs such as obedience training.
What is the difference between Training and Behaviour issues?
Behavioural problems are exactly that and cannot always be resolved with training involving food or toy-based distraction. The solutions are achieved by providing lifestyle changes and adjustments to daily interactions rather than relying on isolated training techniques. This removes the need for owners to set aside specific set times each day to engage in training exercises, but rather utilises adjustments to day-to-day interactions between dog and owner, to find effective solutions. Once behaviour issues are addressed and resolved, you will find that training techniques are either not required or that your dog is far more receptive, and the techniques are more effective as you and your dog now understand each other.
