Reactive rescue Ariake
Ariake is Spanish podenco canario from Swindon who was not listening to his owner and had become reactive outside.
I recently had the pleasure of working with Ben and his one year old rescue Ariake.
Ben is a member of the British paralympic wheelchair basketball team and was having issues with his dog not listening at home but also his reactive behaviour outside towards cyclists, skateboards etc to the point he had actually taken off in pursuit of a cyclist prior to my visit.
My first priority was to take Ben through some day to day exercises with Ariake at home in order for him to start listening to Ben.
Next we headed out to the local park and skate park so I could show Ben how to correctly, safely and comfortably use a leash whilst on his crutches. By helping Ben to have a better understanding of how to read his dogs body language I was able to have Ben interrupt his dogs mind at exactly the right time to prevent the unwanted behaviour taking place.
The session was a massive success and by the end of it Ariake was able to walk past cyclists and skateboarders without so much as a turn of the head. I heard from Ben a few days later and was thrilled to hear that Ariake had not only relaxed in the house to the point where he would no longer jump into the front window every time someone passed the house but that he was also sleeping downstairs with no problems.
The main achievement however is that Ben can now enjoy calm and peaceful walks with his dog.
